The Lost Year...

I've been slowly working my way through the gigantic todo list, and finally managed to get around to moving the blog over. And I realized while doing so, that I haven't written anything in about a year. WOW!!! time flies when your head is in the sand.

This is not to say I haven't been doing anything. I've been doing quite a lot actually. I worked a lot, and that didn't leave time for much else. 2008 was a screwy year, and I probably stopped writing because all I could think about was this darn presidential election and the coming financial apocalypse. It was too overhwelming for me to get too involved, I figured the best thing that I could do is to solidify all things related to income in order to weather the storm.

So what have I been doing? Well, my experiment in fulltime self employment came to an abrupt end after a pretty miserable 6 month contract that did little to advance my financial well being. It did get me some good solid experience in .net 3.5/WCF. And I actually wrote my own ORM layer for the client which proved to be a very interesting project.

I decided it was time to get one of those regular jobs again. I took a job at a media company that deals in newspapers and like all newspaper company's, they are struggling for survival and transitioning over to digital.

The job itself has been interesting, I feel I've sufficiently sharpened my javascript skills, and I feel I'm in a good position to make some real positive impact.

Other than that, I still do freelance, and the combination of the fulltime job plus side gigs seems to be working out pretty good now.

My love affair with python is stronger than ever. in 2008 I revamped an old turbogears application that's been running for a local non-profit organization. And I also got familiar with pylons.

In 2008 I started 2 fairly significant projects that are using pylons. One personal, one is paid work. Both should be seeing the light of day in some fashion by March of this year, I'm sure I'll be writing more about those as time goes on. Hopefully they go well and it brings about more similar projects.

Another project that should be kicking in pretty soon will be using a whole host of python technologies including twisted and pylons, and probably drupal somewhere in mix.

Sometime last year I came across Time Management For Anarchists. And it really struck a chord with me, or inspired rather. So I've been slowly trying to get in the habit of managing my time so that I can better address all my little projects that I want to accomplish(this blog being one of them). We'll see how it goes. But overall, I have set some pretty lofty goals for myself in the area of programming , music, and art in general. Hopefully 2009 will be the year to get through a lot of it.

So here's to new years and new beginnings.

freelance experience

I liked your blog post, altough not too much details on your freelance work. I've watched the time management slide and I should say it was pretty interesting :)

Glad you liked it. I'm not

Glad you liked it. I'm not all that comfortable going into too many details on my freelance work, mainly due to NDA's and intellectual property agreements with my various clients. Rather be safe about the whole thing.
